Speaking Access – Online Workbook

Teacher and student guide for learning fully voice-controlled access to Windows.

17. Lesson Plan

17.1 Access The Basics

This first lesson helps you get comfortable using Speaking Access. You’ll learn how to ask for the time and date, how to pause or close a lesson, and how to get help if you feel stuck.

You’ll also see how the menu works, how to search it, how to navigate common desktop areas, and how to switch between programs.

17.2 How To Dictate Text

This lesson teaches the main ways to speak text into the computer. You’ll learn quick dictation with Print, how to do longer writing using Post Mode, and how to handle real-world examples like typing into a form or doing a Google search.

17.3 What Is Audio Proofreading

This lesson shows how to listen back to what you wrote and fix mistakes without needing to see the screen. You’ll learn how to review text, catch missing words or wrong words, and make quick corrections so your writing sounds clean and professional.

17.4 How To Spell A Word

This lesson teaches you what to do when a word is tricky—names, places, or anything speech recognition might mess up. You’ll learn how to spell a word out loud, confirm it, and then continue dictating without losing your flow.

17.5 How To Use The Browser

This lesson focuses on everyday browsing with your voice. You’ll learn how to use the address bar, move through tabs, go back and forward, refresh, and open common browser areas like downloads or history—so the internet feels simple again.

17.6 Windows The Basics

This lesson helps you move around Windows without relying on keyboard shortcuts. You’ll learn how to open and close programs, find common system areas, and use voice navigation to handle everyday computer tasks with less effort.

17.7 Navigating a Text Window

This lesson teaches how to move around inside documents and text boxes using your voice. You’ll learn how to move by lines, words, and pages, jump to the beginning or end, and keep your place while editing or reading.

17.8 The Power Of Selected Text

This lesson shows why selecting text is a superpower. You’ll learn how to select words or phrases, reuse them, correct them, and work faster—especially when you want to edit without retyping everything.

17.9 How To Use Windows Magnifier

This lesson is for low-vision users who want stronger visual control. You’ll learn how to zoom in and out, move around the screen while zoomed, and use magnifier smoothly so you don’t feel lost.

17.10 Using a Screen Reader to Navigate Websites

This lesson explains how Speaking Access works alongside a screen reader (like NVDA) for browsing. You’ll learn how to move through headings, links, and sections on a webpage, and how to keep navigation predictable while using voice commands.
