Speaking Access – Online Workbook

Teacher and student guide for learning fully voice-controlled access to Windows.

1. Introduction

1.1 What Speaking Access Is

Speaking Access is a program that lets users control their entire computer using only their voice. It replaces most keyboard shortcuts and many mouse actions with simple, natural speech. Students can open programs, browse the web, write text, read information, and move around Windows without needing to touch the keyboard or mouse.

The program is designed to stay quiet and out of the way. It listens continuously, works offline, and responds only when a user speaks a command. Speaking Access also includes helpful modes like Post Mode for writing, Menu View for exploring commands, and a voice-controlled keyboard for typing letters and symbols.

Speaking Access has built-in audio feedback. The proofread selection command can read text out loud, including capital letters, numbers, and symbols.

The goal of Speaking Access is to make computers easier, safer, and more comfortable to use—especially for people who depend on speech as their primary input method.

1.2 Who Speaking Access Is For

Speaking Access is designed for:

  • Blind users who rely on speech and audio feedback instead of sight
  • Low-vision users who prefer hands-free navigation and fewer keyboard steps
  • Dyslexic users who benefit from speaking, listening, and proofreading tools
  • Users with pain, limited mobility, or difficulty using hands or fingers
  • New computer learners who understand spoken instructions more easily
  • Anyone who wants a fully voice-controlled way to use Windows
